Emoji for non-Japanese iPhone 3G users

by Tony Mattke on November 25, 2008

Apple says US users can’t handle 1 gazillion Emjoi icons in their iPhones?? I can handle it, and I think you can too ! Ok, we can do this the easy way.. or the hard way.

emoji

Hard way, v1

scp a copy of /User/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Preferences.plist to your mac, open up your preference list editor and add the key KeyboardEmojiEverywhere, set it to true. scp this back to your phone. restart – read on for enabling emjoi’s keyboard.

Hard way, v2

Not Jailbroken, dont fret. Fire up your favorite backup editor ! Edit above file, restore — read on.

The Easy Way

Ok, if none of the above made sense, and you are jailbroken… fire up cydia — search for emjoi, install, reboot and read on..

How to enable the Emoji Keyboard

Open up Settings -> General -> Keyboard -> International Keyboards -> Japanese ; There should be an Emoji keyboard listed here along with Kana and QWERTY, enable this. When you’ve got the keyboard pulled up in a text message or anywhere… click the command button, this will change keyboards.

Happily enough, even your friends that do not have the emoji keyboard enabled will be able to view your emoji messages as long as they’re on the 2.2 firmware..  As usual, if you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment…
