Recently, an update to all jailbroken phones could of caused major damage to anyone who uses Rock… There were several community updates in the last few days due to the iPad and new Jailbreak release. Saurik believe that Rock is ignoring some key fundamentals of being an APT client, which has caused critical system files to be deleted including diskdev-cmds. If you’re a victim of this, you will only realize when you try to reboot your phone (which you should not do until you’ve verified that you’re phone is OK) Upon reboot your phone will show the Apple/Pineapple logo as normal, but 8 – 12 seconds in, it will shut off. If you enable verbose booting via redsn0w you will see that you’re getting a fsck failed message…
Verification
SSH into your phone, check the /sbin directory… make sure you see fsck, fsck_hfs – if these are missing, your phone should NOT be rebooted. The following screenshot is from a phone that has been trashed.

So, you’ve seen the .com button in ‘Mobile Safari’ that allows you to easily finish off your URLs. But it appears that you can access this on any keyboard that shows the period along with the main keyboard screen. Such as the keyboard shown in Mail.. Simply hold the period key down for a couple seconds and a popup containing .com shows up, along with .org, .edu. and .net.
Check it out !

Ok, so I’m a few days behind on this one… BUT I’ve been running 2.2 jailbroken for a few days and my phone runs wonderfully. Altho, I had a rough start with Categories.. seems that there are some updates that need to be done there.. although I haven’t had a chance to dig in and see what may be causing the issues yet. Has anyone taken a look yet?
There are a few things you’re going to want to pay careful attention to on this update. First off, if you’re going to want the chance to soft unlock your 3g phone in the near futuer, do not do an update via iTunes or QuickPwn. You need to generate your own firmware to upload to the phone that removes the baseband update in 2.2. The iPhone dev team has made great progress in the current 3g baseband, there are no promises they will hack the new baseband in a timely manor, or at all. Second, several people have emailed me with issues of their phone not being activated after jailbreaking 2.2 — in all cases they were on AT&T and had left the activation hack checked in the pwnage tool.
After this update came out, I decided to change how I do the information here for my iPhone. Instead of keeping a long page of updates, and software that I use, I may just blog from time to time about what I’m using, or what I’ve hacked, and update the links to those articles on that iPhone page.. note quite sure yet, but I know I want to make a change… let me know what you think.
Anyway, here are some links for you..
PwnageTool 2.2.1 | OS X (update to 2.2.1)
iPhone 3G 2.2 Firmware
I should also mention that there is an issue with the late 2008 macbook/air/pro — I’m not 100% sure what has happened, but DFU mode isn’t working. It is possible to go from Pwned 2.1 -> Pwned 2.2, it is not possible to go stock -> pwned with Mac OSX and the Late 2008 models. (I have not tested this in Windows as I do not have a non-pwned phone to test with — comments anyone?)

numberkey is a nifty little application that allows you to use your iPhone as a wireless number pad for your laptop. If you enter as many ip addresses as I do, I bet you miss the number pad too. Unfortunately numberkey isn’t free, but for $1.99 I’ll certainly be using it. I almost forgot, they’ve also thrown in skins for every modern mac keyboard to make things match nicely.

I have seen the options for international keyboards on the iPhone since the day I purchased it. But until today, I haven’t had a chance to play with any of them. Since I’ve been attempting to learn Japanese, I decided to enable the Kana keyboard. I must say, I’m rather impressed at its interface. It feels sort of like a T9 input, but its grouped into a hiragana style table. In the screenshot you can see I have selected the RA menu, and moved up to RU to select it. Which completes my sentance, ai shita iru, or, I love you in Japanese. Unfortunately, I am unable to send this to my fiance who speaks Japanese as her phone doesn’t seem to support UTF-8…. ohwell.

Note: I no longer use this, too many issues with duplicated contacts.. — Use Google Sync instead. Not only is it OTA, but it has native support with the iPhone and iCal / Address Book on the Mac.
This will add a script that auto syncs your NemusSync calendars every 20 minutes
- cd /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/
- vi com.paf78.autoNS.plist… add code below …
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
<key>Label</key>
<string>com.paf78.autoNS</string>
<key>UserName</key>
<string>mobile</string>
<key>ProgramArguments</key>
<array>
<string>/Applications/NemusSync.app/NemusSync</string>
<string>--sync</string>
</array>
<key>StartInterval</key>
<integer>1200</integer>
</dict>
</plist>
- Finally, lets tell the system what we added… From the command line, run ” launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.paf78.autoNS.plist “
- Thats it, your calendar should get updated every 1200 seconds!

Yesterday marked 1 week with my iPhone 3G. Overall after a week I am very satisfied with the iPhone. However, there are a few things that Apple skimped on that could’ve made it so much better.
- Memory, 128MB isnt much for a smartphone. Come on, you have 600mhz proc downclocked to around 400mhz, and 128MB of ram? Seriously?
- Cut and Paste… Come on, the Apple Newton had cut and paste, why doesn’t the iPhone 3G?
- Folders, after just a short 7 days, I already have 5 pages of Apps on my springboard. Can we get a couple folders to stash some of this away?
- SMS and Voicemail notifications… why in the world do they lock these down? I should be able to use the same ringtones I use for the phone!
- Landscape mode for ALL input screens. At least for all Apple applications. Ok, I’m 6’9″, I have big hands, and with that comes big fingers. Landscape mode works sooo much better for me !!
- MMS — WTF?
Now, you may notice that I miss out on one of the big things most people complain about. However, I can easily understand Apple’s want to keep the operating system closed and locked down to only approved applications. It protects less knowledgeable people from malicious applications. It also protects developers from their applications being stolen. As long as Apple continues to keep a level head about the people who do wish to jailbreak their phone, I have no problem with them leaving the phone locked, I can only imagine if every CEO, VP, and and computer illiterate had an unlocked phone… could you imagine all the issues they would have?
Anyway, I love it. Can’t wait to see what Apple has in store for the iPhone next, but first, lets see what they have in store for the next MacBook Pro!
