Recently, an update to all jailbroken phones could of caused major damage to anyone who uses Rock… There were several community updates in the last few days due to the iPad and new Jailbreak release. Saurik believe that Rock is ignoring some key fundamentals of being an APT client, which has caused critical system files to be deleted including diskdev-cmds. If you’re a victim of this, you will only realize when you try to reboot your phone (which you should not do until you’ve verified that you’re phone is OK) Upon reboot your phone will show the Apple/Pineapple logo as normal, but 8 – 12 seconds in, it will shut off. If you enable verbose booting via redsn0w you will see that you’re getting a fsck failed message…
Verification
SSH into your phone, check the /sbin directory… make sure you see fsck, fsck_hfs – if these are missing, your phone should NOT be rebooted. The following screenshot is from a phone that has been trashed.

This page is completely out of date… I’m trying to update it though. Please contact me with any questions
If you’re looking for my iPhone tutorials or hacks, I have moved them each to individual posts which you can find here. If you are looking for the most recent update on what software I am using and currently love, you can find that below.
Here is the low down on my current iPhone setup. I’ve included a list of apps that I think are top shelf. Keep in mind, in order to get any real functionality out of this device you’ll need to jailbreak it. Check out the links at the end of the article for help on that.
After you jailbreak your phone, you should have a copy of Cydia. This is the equivilant of the AppStore for non Apple approved applications. The following is a list of things I highly reccomend you grab.
Cydia Apps
- SBSettings – Great app for managing your phone
- Five Icon Doc – Adjusts spacing to let you keep 5 apps on your dock
- OpenSSH – lets to ssh to / from your phone !
- Insomnia – Lets you keep wireless/etc running instead of letting the phone sleep (very usefull for ssh’ing into the phone)
- MakeItMine – Lets you change carrier name / Banner (clock area)
- MyTraceRoute – If you’ve never used mtr under *nix, you need to.
NemusSync – Sync your iPhone Calendar to Google Calendar ( See “cron” addon for syncing )
No longer works — Use Google Sync instead, its OTA and much better in general.
- Vi IMproved – Vim on your iphone !
- PdaNet – Tether your iPhone
- veency – vnc server for your iphone…ohyeah
- Winterboard – Customization Tool (list of addons for it below)
- Black Wi-Fi Bars
- Blue Apple Signal Bars
- BulletBill Slider
- Palm Pre Dialer
- Pixel Battery
- Retro Loaders
- Transparent Dock
- Transparent Icon Labels
- Black Navigation Bars
- MGS! Alert Txt
- Touch Keyboard Sound
- Fading Apple Loaders (not used anymore)
- Wallpaper (mine)
- iZipper Sliders (not used anymore — see my fix for this here)
- Black Status Bar ( Doesn’t work properly with 3.0 yet.. mine)
Even so you’ve jailbroken your phone, you’re still going to need to cruise the Apple AppStore. Here is a list of AppStore Applications I really like. There are a few applications that I still want to try out, but have issue with paying for yet so check back.
App Store
- Games
- 2079 – fun game, like geometry wars
- wurlde – great word game
- Flight Control – Could spend hours playing this
- Field Runners – fun defense game
- Oregon Trail – brings back memories
- Katamari – fun, but the controls are a bit crazy
- Toys
- Face Melter – I really like this app, its lots of fun. And only $2
- Tools
- BeejiveIM – MultiClient IM client – very much worth the $16
Funambol – I use this to sync my contacts with Thunderbird. $free
I no longer use this, too many issues with duplicated contacts.. — Use Google Sync instead. Not only is it OTA, but it has native support with the iPhone and iCal / Address Book on the Mac.
- Showtimes – Get movie showtimes from local theaters, etc $free
- Missing Calc – Great Binary / Hex Calculator
- iKana – Great Japanese Hiragana and Katakana learning tool
- WebApps
- Facebook – version 3 has much improved the previous app
- WordPress – keep your blog up to date on the go !
- Tweetie – great iphone app, worth the money!
