Setting Up VOIP Lab

The gear list for a Cisco home VoIP lab with two 1760s, CME 4.1 and a 7960G, and the goal of answering both the house and office lines from one phone.

This week I’ve started setting up a VOIP lab to explore the technology and when I’m done, I plan to integrate it into my home network. So far I’ve purchased the following for my lab…

  • c1760-V 192D/48F PVDM-12 VIC-2FXO VIC-2FXS running c1700-ipvoicek9-mz.124-15.T7 and CME 4.1
  • c1760 64D/32F with VIC-2FXS running c1700-ipvoicek9-mz.124-15.T7
  • Cisco 7960G VOIP Phone
  • 2x Analog Phones

I’ve also purchased a NM-32A to replace the Cisco Pro 2511 that I was using in my lab as an access server. My ONT studies have continued over the past couple days, and I hope to take the test in the next week or two. I’ve discovered that QOS on Cisco is so simple when compared to Linux tc. But I digress..

My goal for setting up my equipment is to terminate two lines onto the router, one for the house, and one for my office. I’d like to use the 7960 as my office phone, and be able to answer either line from it. I imagine this will be pretty simple once I get everything here.. Any suggestions?

7960’s pwn, multiple line appearances on the phone is simple.. You shouldn’t have any trouble getting it to work. I think it was all of 4 lines in the UC520 that we just setup in an office environment that had to be able to distinguish incoming calls and answer on the appropriate line appearance on the 7960.

I’ve seen some configs that support “distinctive ring” that can be used to set different ring patterns on even your analog lines. Could be useful to you if you have a cordless phone running around the house to have it ring whenever the office is called (but would sound different so you would know). Just an idea.. Good luck with it!

Actually, thats going to be the topic of an upcomming article. On ISRs such as the 2811 you can setup your pots lines as SCCP controlled using STCAPP. Cisco in their ultimate stupidity decided that this feature is unsupported on non-ISR hardware. So, for my simple 2 line, 1 ip phone home setup, I would have to buy a router that costs 10x as much used…

Luckily I found someone that has some TCL-fu. I’m going to test the script at some point when I can sit in my office for more than 1 minute without dying of heat exhaustion. I feel bad for my poor servers in there.
