Nobody's Born Fluent in Binary
192.168.10.37/26. Network, mask, broadcast, first host, last host, usable count. No calculator, no cheat sheet.
If you rattled all six off without breaking stride, you got your reps in somewhere. For most of us it clicked because someone took the time. A coworker who explained the same thing four different ways until one stuck, or a senior engineer who handed over lab gear and said go break it. I had people like that early on, and I haven’t forgotten how much that was worth.
So this one’s for the folks still earning their reps. There’s a new TRAINING section on the /tools page with four trainers. All free, all running entirely in your browser.
IPv4 Subnet Trainer: type an address, drag the prefix slider, and watch the full 32-bit binary breakdown update live. Network bits, host bits, and the boundary between them, all color coded. Once the picture clicks, flip over to the drill tab.
IPv6 Subnet Trainer: the same idea at the nibble level. All eight hextets split into nibbles, a prefix slider that runs from /0 to /128, and a binary zoom on whichever hextet the prefix boundary lands in… which is exactly the spot where v6 subnetting goes sideways for people. Binary Trainer: one byte, eight switches. Flip bits and watch the place values add up, then run bytes through AND, OR, XOR, and NOT one column at a time.
Hex Trainer: one byte, two nibbles. Convert hex to decimal and back, toggle individual bits, and keep the 0 through F reference table on screen while you work.
The v4 and v6 drills are fill-in-the-worksheet style. The v4 drill deals you a random CIDR and wants network, mask, broadcast, first host, last host, and usable count (yes, it knows about /31s). The v6 drill asks for the network, the last address, the next network over, the interface-ID bit count, and how many /64s fit in the block. Both track streak, best, solved, and skips.
Here’s my favorite part. When you finally blow a streak of three or more, the drill offers you a share link. Send it to a coworker and they land on the page with a banner along the lines of “Tony ran a streak of 8 and skipped 37 questions… think you can beat it?” The skip count rides along in the banner, so choose your skips wisely.
There’s a checksum on that link to keep things honest, but anyone who dives into the page source can forge one in a few minutes. I’m at peace with this. If you hand-craft a fake subnetting streak, you did more binary math than the drill would’ve asked of you.

A note on the plumbing: no backend, no accounts, no analytics on your answers. Everything runs client-side, and the share link is data packed into the URL. Nothing you type gets sent anywhere.
I started this blog to write down what I was learning and to walk other people through topics that took me too long to figure out. Between conference coverage and BGP posts, it’s easy to drift toward writing only for people who already know this stuff, and I don’t want to lose that part of my roots. The trainers are a course correction. If you’re studying for a cert, put one in your rotation. If you’re the senior on the team now, send the new tech a link before their first maintenance window.
